According to a Forbes Magazine article, a study shows that microplastics have begun to show up in the diets of people from table salt. While in the past, your average white table salt seemed to not be much of a cause for plastic-based concerns this new Forbes article suggests otherwise.
The article references a study that sampled traditional table salt from not only the U.S. but internationally as well and the results show that we are ingesting microplastic particles from table salt. Microplastics, which are described as pieces of plastic 5 millimeters in size or smaller, can sneak their way into your body through plastic containers, water bottles, and now ordinary table salt.
In fact, the study says when ingesting the recommended amount of salt, you may be ingesting 660 pieces of plastic every year from the salt. The article suggests that Americans specifically consume more salt than recommended which means they may be ingesting even more plastic particles. Many other factors may contribute to a larger quantity of plastic already existing in your system currently as well.
While sea salt seems like it may be a safer alternative, that’s not necessarily true either. Though some sea salt companies do not source their salt from oceans but instead choose to source from salt reserves formed from evaporated bodies of salt water, other sea salt sources are not so pure. Due to the plastic pollution affecting oceans around the world, the Guardian sites researchers that believe sea salt could be more prone to plastic contamination. The dehydration process required for obtaining sea salt may be a contributing factor as well.
